Growing mustaches in November is fun, but ask any MoDuke and they will tell you — the hairy endeavor benefits a serious mission to support men's health.

For the past eight years faculty and staff from Duke University and Duke Health have formed teams to support the Movember Foundation's annual fundraiser known as Movember. On the first day of "Movember" Duke men shaved down and prepared mentally and physically for the whiskered month ahead.

Throughout the month of November, MoDukes upped their looks by growing out bushy 'staches of every shape and size. The MoDukes and their Mo Sisters hosted numerous fundraising events including a Chili Cook-Off at Bull City Ciderworks and a “Bid-Your-Face-Off” auction gala event at Fullsteam Brewery, which included luxury, albeit creative, shaves provided by Pedro Williams, the Durham-based franchise in the line of Arrow Haircuts barbershops (additional locations in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Cary and Charlotte).

The MoDukes were led by Movember Student Ambassador, Jon-Jon Fuste, who represented Duke for 2019-2020 and led his personal team, Sigma Nu Fraternity, to fundraising over $11,000! Other leaders included Andrew Armstrong, MD, ScM, FACP, who headed a group of faculty and staff making up Team Duke Cancer Institute and Urology resident Dominic Grimberg, MD, who led Team Duke Urology. Together, health system MoDukes, and their university counterparts, raised $40,000 to support the Movember Foundation and won the Movember Top College Network challenge.

“The entire Duke community came together and made a fantastic contribution to a worthy cause supporting men’s health and prostate cancer research,” said Grimberg. "We couldn't have asked a better competition!"

Team Duke Cancer Institute raised $11,454, followed by Sigma Nu Fraternity raising $11,283 and Duke Urology rounding out the top three with $10,318 raised.

“Movember fundraising was again a huge success,” Armstrong said. “These funds enable the Movember Foundation to fund groundbreaking science here and around the world. Just this year, our team was the recipient of two Prostate Cancer Foundation Challenge Awards. This kind of collaboration is key to cancer care and prevention.”

Movember is a global movement aimed at raising funds and awareness for men’s health by encouraging participants to grow unique mustaches. The participants promote their mustaches through social media to raise money and awareness for men’s health. The Movember foundation, established in 2003, has raised more than $710 million in 21 countries, supporting cancer projects worldwide, including several at Duke.
